Usually solitary but can occur in small groups beneath oak, beech or other broadleaf trees and very occasionally with coniferous trees.
6 - 12 cms.
10 - 18 mm diameter, 4 - 8 cms tall.
August - November.
Inedible. Very bitter. Cooking doesn't help.
