Pine wood is the usual habitat, although very occasionally you may also find these brackets on dead hardwoods such as beech or oak, almost invariably a long time after the tree has died and its bark fallen away.
Visible throughout the year, but they release their spores in late autumn.
Generally considered to be edible.
