Found nearly always on the basal roots of hardwood trees, notably Beech and Oak.
3 - 7 cms. 
0.8 - 1.5 cms diameter: 7 - 15 cms. long.
July - October.
Recorded as edible but not worthwhile. Stems are very tough.
