The name Iris is Greek for 'rainbow' since the flower is grown in gardens for their yellow, blue, white or violet flowers. In France the flower forms the basis for the fleur-de-lys, or 'flower of Louis' as Louis VII adopted the 3-flower symbol which was first created by Clovis, the leader of the Franks. He was successful in chasing the Romans from Northern Gaul and afterwards changed his heraldic symbol of three toads to three irises
