Small flying insects, caught using their legs like a basket to scoop the prey up while flying, or insects taken from leaves.
31 mm.
Dark body with the 8th segment of the abdomen coloured pale blue
They can have up to five different colour forms.

Lowland habitats including brackish or polluted water.
Late May to September.
A number of colour forms exist, where the abdomen can be pink (rufescens), lilac (violacea) or green (infuscans) when the damselfly first emerges.
