Suspended organic matter in the water 
An increasing body of evidence contradicts the view  that the Chironomidae do not feed as adults. Adults of many species do, in fact, feed. The natural foods reported include fresh fly droppings, nectar, pollen, honeydew, and various sugar-rich materials,
Males: Up to 13 mm.
Almost any aquatic or semiaquatic area.
Emergence of adults occur in spring, late March or early April.
These are non biting midges.
