"Dog" is a derogatory term applied to certain flowers comparing them unfavourably with a superior variety of the flower. This pretty little flower is thought to be inferior to the scented Sweet Violet (Viola odorata).

One of the most distinguishing features of common dog-violet is the notched, pale spur behind the petals.
