The abdomen is a dull grey-brown and quite hairy, the back two pairs of legs are usually quite orange in colour, with perhaps more grey in the front pair.
There is a noticeable orange area at the base of the wings.
Well wooded areas.
Late April - July, although it may be seen in early Autumn.
Slightly smaller than the common house fly.
