The heart-shaped flowers of this plant have led to its folk-name of "Break-your-mother's-heart". Another name is "Bird's-eye Speedwell" due to the flower's eye-like appearance. It was thought that if anyone was unwise enough to pick these flowers, a bird would come and peck out their eyes, or even worse, their mother's eyes!
