The name of the flower derives from the Latin for "first rose", a reference to the fact that it comes into bloom early in Spring before most other flowers. In medieval times primrose was used to treat rheumatism, gout and headaches. It was also claimed that a potion made from the plant was able to win over the heart of a potential lover.
