The scientific name "lychnis" is Greek for rose campion while "flos-cuculi" means cuckoo flower. Also known locally is some areas as batchelor's buttons due the multiple ball-like flower heads which resemble old fashioned buttons. Another local name is thunder flower. It was believed that picking these flowers would cause thunder and lightning.
