Trees with hollowed out cavities or holes in the trunk.
Coniferous seeds, beechnuts, acorns, and nuts.
Coat colour can range from Black to Red although in Britain it is predominately Red. However, they all have white or cream underside.
19 to 23 cm. Tail length:15 to 20 cm

Feb - March and June - July. Litters of 3 to 4 while 6 is possible.
The Squirrel parapoxvirus is fatal to red squirrels. It is often carried by grey squirrels, who rarely die from the disease.
