Any type of marsh, river, lake, flooded area, whether fresh,
brackish or saline, but especially those with islands for nesting or dense reedbeds.
Insects, molluscs, newts, crustaceans, worms, leeches,frogs, tadpoles and small fish up to 10–15 cm.
All white, with long spatulate black bills and long black legs. In flight they fly with necks and legs extended. In the breeding season adults show some yellow on their breast and bill tip.
Northerly breeding populations are migratory but may only migrate short distances while other, more southerly populations are resident and nomadic or partially migratory.
