Wet places such as riverbanks and lake shores and in some drier places where the ground has been disturbed.

Has male and female flowers called catkins produced in early spring. Tannin and Salicin can be extracted from the bark but the tree is not a good timber source and the wood is not strong and does not burn easily. In some parts of Eastern Europe the willow shoots are used as a replacement for palm branches on Palm Sunday religious festivals.
