Wood Sage has been used as a substitute for hops in beer flavouring. In ancient times, the Greeks, and in particular, Teucer, a king of Troy, used it as a medicine. In more recent times, Wood Sage tea was considered to be an effective protection against rheumatism. It has several other folk-names such as "wood garlic", "ambroise" and "hind heal" as it was thought that wounded deer could be cured by eating it.
